An Open Heart & An Open Mind

An Open Heart and an Open Mind

Scripture:
“A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash.” — Proverbs 15:14

It’s easy to become set in our ways.

We have our opinions, our routines, our expectations, and our ideas about how things should be. We know what we like, what we believe, and sometimes even what we think God should do. But sometimes, without realizing it, we can become so focused on what we already know that we stop being willing to learn something new.

Being open-minded doesn’t mean accepting everything as truth or abandoning our convictions. It means being willing to listen, learn, ask questions, and consider a different perspective.

Jesus often challenged people to see things differently. He welcomed people others rejected. He spoke with those others avoided. He taught lessons that challenged comfortable beliefs and invited people to look beyond what they thought they already understood.
An open mind begins with a humble heart.

Sometimes God wants to teach us through someone we didn't expect, a situation we didn't understand, or an experience that doesn't fit neatly into our plans. If we are convinced that we already have all the answers, we may miss what God is trying to show us.

Being open-minded also means being willing to admit, “Maybe I don't have the whole picture.”
That can be difficult. But humility creates room for growth.

Ask God to help you listen before you react. To understand before you judge. To be curious instead of defensive. And to recognize that seeing something differently doesn't always mean someone is wrong—it may simply mean they are seeing a part of the picture that you haven't seen yet.

At the same time, an open mind should always be paired with discernment. We don't have to accept every idea simply because it is different. We can listen thoughtfully, compare what we hear with God's Word, pray for wisdom, and allow God to guide us.

Today, ask yourself:
Am I truly willing to listen to others, or am I only waiting for my turn to respond?
Is there an opinion I've already dismissed without really trying to understand it?
Could God be using someone or something unexpected to teach me?
Sometimes growth begins when we stop saying, “I already know,” and start asking, “God, what are You trying to show me?”

Prayer:
Lord, give me an open heart and an open mind. Help me to listen, learn, and understand before I judge. Keep me grounded in Your truth while giving me the humility to recognize that I don't have all the answers. Help me see people with compassion, consider perspectives different from my own, and remain teachable. Show me where I need to grow, and give me the wisdom to recognize Your voice in the process. Amen.

Reflection:
An open mind doesn't mean believing everything—it means being humble enough to keep learning.
