Finding Your Way Back to Yourself Through God

Finding Your Way Back to Yourself Through God

Scripture: Matthew 16:26 (NIV) : "What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?"

Have you ever looked at yourself and wondered, Where did I go?

Not physically, but emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually. Somewhere along the way, you became so busy being everything to everyone else that you stopped being yourself.

You became the dependable one. The strong one. The one people call when they need something. The one who fixes problems, carries responsibilities, keeps things moving, and makes sure everyone else is okay.

You learned to put your feelings aside because someone else needed you. You said yes when you wanted to say no. You stayed quiet when you wanted to speak up. You smiled when you were hurting. You kept showing up even when you were running on empty.

And somewhere in all of that, you started losing pieces of yourself.

Maybe you don't even recognize the person you've become. Maybe the things that once made you happy don't bring you joy anymore. Maybe you feel disconnected, exhausted, overwhelmed, or simply lost.

The hardest part about losing yourself is that it doesn't always happen all at once. It happens slowly. One compromise at a time. One ignored feeling at a time. One unmet need at a time. One moment of convincing yourself that everyone else's happiness matters more than your own.

Eventually, you become so accustomed to taking care of everyone else that you forget how to take care of yourself.

But here's something important: God never asked you to lose yourself in order to love others.

Jesus teaches us about loving others, serving others, forgiving others, and putting others before ourselves. But that doesn't mean we are supposed to completely abandon who God created us to be.

There is a difference between being selfless and becoming invisible.

There is a difference between serving others and allowing yourself to be emptied by everyone else's expectations.

There is a difference between loving people and losing your identity trying to keep them happy.

God created you with a purpose, a heart, gifts, passions, and a personality that are uniquely yours. He didn't create you simply to fill everyone else's needs. He created you to have a relationship with Him, to grow, to experience joy, and to live a life that reflects His love.

Sometimes finding yourself again means learning to say no without feeling guilty. Sometimes it means stepping away from situations that constantly drain you. Sometimes it means acknowledging that you are hurt, tired, disappointed, or overwhelmed instead of pretending everything is okay.

And sometimes it means getting quiet long enough to ask God, "Who am I becoming, and is this who You created me to be?"

Stop Living for Everyone Else's Approval

Galatians 1:10 (NIV): "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?"

One of the quickest ways to lose yourself is to spend your life trying to make everyone else happy.

You start measuring your worth by how useful you are, how much you accomplish, how many people depend on you, and how little you inconvenience others.

You become afraid of disappointing people. You worry about what they think. You question your decisions because someone might not agree.

But you cannot build a life around keeping everyone else comfortable.

Some people will misunderstand your boundaries. Some will dislike your decisions. Some may even become upset when you stop doing everything they have grown accustomed to you doing.

That doesn't automatically mean you're doing something wrong.

You are allowed to grow. You are allowed to change. You are allowed to have needs, boundaries, dreams, and expectations of your own.

Your identity should not be determined by how happy everyone else is with you.

God Hasn't Lost Sight of You

Psalm 139:1-2 (NIV): "You have searched me, Lord, and you know me."

Even when you don't recognize yourself, God does.

He knows the person you were before the disappointments, the heartbreak, the responsibilities, and the expectations began weighing you down.

He knows the dreams you stopped pursuing. He knows the tears you never let anyone see. He knows the words you swallowed and the battles you fought quietly.

You may feel like you've lost yourself, but you have never been lost to God.

You don't have to become the person everyone expects you to be to deserve His love.

You don't have to earn your place through constant giving, endless sacrifice, or always being strong.

God sees you beyond your roles, responsibilities, accomplishments, and mistakes.

And perhaps finding yourself again begins with remembering that your worth was never dependent on what you could do for everyone else.

Give Yourself Permission to Find Yourself Again

Romans 12:2 (NIV): "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Finding yourself again doesn't mean going backward or becoming exactly who you used to be.

Life changes us. Experiences shape us. Pain teaches us. Mistakes humble us. Relationships challenge us. And sometimes the person we were before isn't the person God is calling us to become.

But you can rediscover the parts of yourself that got buried along the way.

You can find joy again. You can rediscover your passions. You can learn to speak honestly. You can establish boundaries. You can stop apologizing for having feelings.

You can learn that being strong doesn't mean never needing help.

You can learn that being a good person doesn't mean allowing people to continually hurt you.

You can learn that saying no doesn't make you selfish.

And you can learn that taking care of yourself isn't a betrayal of the people you love.

Give yourself permission to breathe. To rest. To grow. To change. To make mistakes. To discover what brings your heart joy again.

You don't have to have everything figured out today.

Just start making room for the person God created you to be.

Something to Think About

Take a moment and honestly ask yourself:
  1. When was the last time I did something simply because it made ME happy?
  2. Am I making decisions based on what I want and believe, or am I constantly worried about disappointing someone?
  3. Have I become so focused on taking care of others that I've neglected my own emotional and spiritual needs?
  4. What parts of myself have I pushed aside to meet other people's expectations?
  5. If I stopped trying to be everything to everyone, what would I want my life to look like?
Don't rush through these questions. Sometimes the most important conversations we need to have are the ones we finally have with ourselves and God.

A Challenge for Today

Today, do one thing that brings you back to yourself.

It doesn't have to be something big. Take a walk. Sit quietly with God. Listen to music you love. Pick up an old hobby. Say no to something that doesn't need to be your responsibility. Have an honest conversation. Give yourself permission to rest without feeling guilty.

And most importantly, stop measuring your worth by how much you can do for everyone else.

You are more than your responsibilities.

You are more than the person everyone calls when they need something.

You are more than the sacrifices you've made.

You are more than the mistakes you've made.

You are a person God intentionally created, and you deserve to live a life that reflects that truth.

Don't spend so much time being everything to everyone else that you forget to be someone to yourself.

You haven't missed your opportunity to find yourself again. You can start today.

A Prayer for Finding Yourself Again

Heavenly Father,
I come to You feeling a little lost. Somewhere along the way, I became so consumed with taking care of everyone else, meeting expectations, and carrying responsibilities that I forgot to take care of the person You created me to be.

I am tired of pretending I'm okay when I'm not. I'm tired of putting my feelings aside, saying yes when I mean no, and constantly worrying about disappointing others.

Lord, help me find my way back to You and back to myself. Remind me that my worth isn't measured by how much I do, how many people I help, or how well I meet everyone else's expectations.

Give me the courage to establish boundaries, the strength to let go of things that are weighing me down, and the wisdom to recognize what deserves my time and energy.

Help me rediscover the joy, passions, dreams, and parts of myself that I've pushed aside. Teach me that it's okay to rest, okay to change, okay to grow, and okay to put my own well-being in the picture.

Most importantly, remind me that even when I don't recognize myself, You still see me. You still know me. You still love me.

Help me stop living a life that is simply about meeting everyone else's expectations and start living a life that honors the purpose You have for me.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
