Love is a Choice

Love Is a Choice, Not a Feeling
Scripture:
“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
— Colossians 3:14

We often think of love as a feeling.

We feel love when someone makes us happy. We feel close when everything is going well. We feel connected when we are understood, appreciated, and cared for.

But what happens when the feelings fade?

What happens when someone disappoints you, frustrates you, hurts you, or simply gets on your nerves?

That’s when we discover that real love is more than a feeling. Love is a choice.

God doesn’t call us to love only when it is easy. He calls us to put on love. That means love is something we intentionally choose to live out—even when we don't necessarily feel like it.

Choosing love might mean choosing patience when you'd rather be irritated.
Choosing kindness when you feel hurt.
Choosing forgiveness when you're still angry.
Choosing to listen instead of walking away.
Choosing grace when someone doesn't deserve it.
Choosing to speak words that build up instead of words that tear down.

Jesus demonstrated this kind of love perfectly. His love wasn't based on whether people treated Him well or whether He received anything in return. He loved because love is who He is.

There will be days when you don't feel loving toward someone. That doesn't mean you don't love them. It means you have an opportunity to choose love in a deeper way.

Feelings change. Circumstances change. People change.
But God's love remains constant.
And when we choose to love—even when our feelings aren't cooperating—we reflect the heart of Christ.

So today, don't ask only, “Do I feel love?”
Ask, “How can I choose love today?”
Maybe your choice is patience.
Maybe it's forgiveness.
Maybe it's a difficult conversation.
Maybe it's giving someone another chance.
Maybe it's simply choosing not to respond out of anger.
Love isn't always easy. But it is always worth choosing.

Prayer:
Lord, help me remember that love is more than a feeling. Give me the strength to choose love when it's difficult, patience when I'm frustrated, grace when I've been hurt, and forgiveness when I don't feel ready. Help me love others the way You have loved me—with compassion, kindness, patience, and grace. When my feelings change, remind me that Your love never does. Help me choose love today. Amen.

Reflection:
Who is God inviting you to choose love toward today—even if you don't feel like it?
Love isn't just something we feel. It's something we choose, again and again.
