Family Movie Devotionals: Onward
In Onward, Ian and Barley set off on a quest to see their dad. Ian was just a baby when his dad passed away and has no memories of him. He has a whole list of things he wants them to do together. But at the end of the movie, Ian realizes that his brother Barley has done all of those things with him, and that Barley is like a dad to him. Barley is always there for Ian and has helped him grow up.
The way Barley takes care of Ian can teach us about what the church is supposed to be like. Church is not just the place you go on Sundays. The church is the family of God all over the world! Everyone who believes in Jesus is part of the church. And the Bible says that we are supposed to take care of each other.
Romans 12 says, “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor... Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.”
When we believe in Jesus, we are children of God. That makes all believers brothers and sisters! We are to love each other and take care of each other just like brothers and sisters do. Older Christians are supposed to take care of younger Christians and teach them the good news of Jesus.
This is called discipleship. It’s just like how even though Barley wasn’t Ian’s dad, he looked after Ian and taught him how to grow up. Discipleship is when Christians help each other grow in their love for Jesus.
Discipleship can happen in so many different ways! It happens in church, kids ministry, and youth group. It happens when a group gets together to pray or study the Bible. It can happen one-on-one. It can even happen when a group of Christian friends just hangs out together and encourages one another. Discipleship has so many possibilities!
It’s so important for believers to care for each other. In Christ, we are a family. Let’s show the world how much Jesus loves us by loving and helping each other!
